Travel resolutions for 2019

New Year’s Resolutions. Love them or hate them, goals and changes are likely on your mind at this time of year.

One thing we can all agree on: we want 2019 to be a little better. If you’re planning to travel in the new year, that’s an easy place to start.

No matter your reason for traveling, here are a few resolutions to improve your travel experience in 2019:

1. De-Stress Your Travel
Travel brings with it crowds, noise, and unexpected changes, but with a little planning you can minimize the stress:
  • Bring comfort with you. Regardless of whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure, bring along something that will help you chill. This might be soothing music, a favorite travel pillow, essential oils, healthy snacks, or all of the above. Treat your travel time as relaxation time.
  • It goes without saying, but do your best to plan ahead. Know your timetables, contacts, and destination. Knowing what to expect can take a lot of the tension out of your travel. Take a look at these top travel apps for 2019 that can help you put the details in place.
  • More importantly, be prepared to roll with the waves of change. Flight delays, inclement weather, lost luggage. These things can’t be anticipated in advance, and worrying about them will only cause more stress. Treat them as a normal part of travel. If you’ve already packed comfort for yourself and done your planning, you’ll be able to sail through these waves.
  • Use technology to chill. Mind full of all your travel details? Let your phone do the extra work. These relaxation apps can help you unwind, practice mindfulness, sleep better, and fit a little exercise into your day.
  • If possible, book a furnished rental instead of a hotel. At a furnished rental you will have the convenience of all the comforts of home at your fingertips including laundry and a full kitchen. Instead of being packed into a busy hotel you’ll have plenty of space to settle in and relax. Take a look at some of our furnished rentals in Southern California .
2. Protect your health
  • Business travelers know, frequent travel can upset your sleep routines, make it difficult to eat healthy, and make regular exercise a challenge. Some of this is out of your control – you can’t avoid a change in time zones! So brainstorm in advance to find ways to take care of yourself when you have to travel. Here are just a few ideas:
  • If you’re staying at one of our furnished rentals , order grocery delivery the evening you arrive or the next day, so you’ll be assured of fresh healthy food that you can prepare yourself in our fully furnished kitchens. We can help you locate the closest grocery store.
  • If you’re staying at a hotel, research local dining options ahead of time. You don't want to be stuck choosing between pizza delivery and a burger and fries!
  • Resolve to take advantage of local amenities. If you’re staying in a hotel you’ll likely have access to a fitness center. If you’re staying in one of our furnished rentals, you may have access to a community pool or tennis courts.
  • Bring walking shoes! In Southern California our weather is beautiful year round, so all you have to do to stay active is go for a stroll and explore.
  • Make sleep a priority. Try to build in time to get the hours of sleep you need, and check out sleep meditations to help you unwind and get some solid z’s.
3. Include Family
Time apart can wear on your relationships. This year, do your best to include family.
  • Plan regular calls, or, better yet, video calls with your significant other and other family. Real time communication, even about mundane daily details, can help you stay connected, and planning these ahead of time can give you both something to look forward to.
  • Find time for long-distance recreation. Find an online game that you can play with your kids or your significant other. If there’s a show that you usually watch together, see if you can watch it wherever you’re staying and text or skype while you watch together. You can still make some memories, even when you’re apart!
  • Send pictures! Even if it’s just a good morning selfie, those simple exchanges will brighten your day.
  • Plan a trip with family! If you’re a snowbird, maybe this means inviting some of the family to join you at your beach rental. If you travel a lot for business, maybe you can take the family to one of the places you’ve already been, and show them some of the sites you enjoyed.
4.) Try something new!
Finally, try something new. This could be as simple as sampling local cuisine (in Southern California you’ll find everything from Korean tacos to delicious dim sum and more!), or as adventurous as learning to surf. Come back from your trip with a new memory and a great story!
