Best of Newport Beach: Top Spots for Icy Treats

Surrounded by other popular hubs, like Dana Point, Corona Del Mar, and San Clemente, and Costa Mesa, the Newport Beach area stands out for its beautiful beaches, great shopping scene, and of course, tasty food!

You'll want to see and do it all, and on a hot summer day a break for ice cream, a smoothie, or acai bowl is the perfect way to cool down and re-energize for more Newport Beach adventures!

Take a look at some of these top local spots for ice cream, gelato, and more in Newport Beach!

Sprinkles Ice Cream
952 Avocado Ave
Newport Beach, CA 92660

Does Sprinkles live up to the hype? We think so! Sprinkles Cupcakes are a must-try on a list of things to do in Newport Beach, and its sister store, Sprinkles Ice Cream , is perfect for a summer pick-me-up. With combinations of their most popular flavors, like red velvet, Captain Crunch, and Salted Caramel, Sprinkles Ice Cream is a unique way to experience the Sprinkles flavor during the summer heat. Make sure to check their flavor calendar to see what they'll be serving up during your visit. Sprinkles is very popular so be prepared for lines and have a second flavor in mind, just in case your first choice is sold out!

Sugar 'N  Spice
310 Marine Ave
Newport Beach, CA 92662

One of our top recommended things to do in Newport Beach is to take the ferry to Balboa Island. And if you visit Balboa Island, you really have got to try a couple of local specialties: the frozen banana, and the Balboa bar. Sugar 'N Spice is the very first frozen banana and Balboa bar shop on the island, and it's still going strong today. At sugar and spice you can customize your banana or Balboa bar (a hand-dipped ice cream bar) with the toppings of your choice for a cold sweet treat to suit your taste!

Too Sweet
302 Marine Ave
Newport Beach, CA 92662

Too Sweet is another solid choice for a classic Balboa Bar or chocolate covered banana. Since Too sweet is also a chocolate shop many visitors say the quality of the chocolate on the bars and bananas at Too Sweet is better than other shops - but we'll let you be the judge of that! If you're put off by long lines at other chocolate covered banana shops, you'll often find a shorter line at Too Sweet, since the shop isn't quite as well known. This can really be a plus on a busy day! Too Sweet also offers assorted chocolates and dipped strawberries and apples, and if all those sweet choices weren't enough it's also attached to a frozen yogurt store, leaving the icy treats options endless!

North Shore Shave Ice
2200 W Oceanfront
Newport Beach, CA 92663

Both affordable and fun, North Shore Shave Ice makes frosty and delicious shaved ice that is reminiscent of classic island flavors. Stop by after a trip to Crystal Cove State park on your next Beachside vacation for an instant refresher! Customers rave about the smooth, fine texture of the shaved ice not to mention the accessible parking and frequent deals through Yelp and Groupon. Be sure to check offers before ordering! There are even kids sizes at only $3 a cup! Choose from flavors like green apple, passion fruit, banana, and strawberry, or more adventurous choices like boysenberry or Mai Tai, and then add toppings like red bean and condensed milk for the complete experience!

Banzai Bowls
114 22nd St
Newport Beach, CA 92663

For a refreshing acai bowl or smoothie you really can't go wrong with this classic! Banzai Bowls has a variety of acai and pitaya bowls on their menu to suit all tastes, as well as vibrant and delicious smoothies, and organic coffee for that perfect afternoon pick-me-up. With a few locations around SoCal you can visit them not only in Newport Beach but also Costa Mesa, Laguna, San Clemente, and Huntington Beach!

Porrovita
3000 Newport Beach Blvd
Newport Beach, CA 92663

Another solid choice for acai bowls and smoothies, Porrovita also features a selection of juices on their menu, perfect if you're needing a healthy boost to your day. Go ahead and splurge on the coconut bowl option for some extra summer vibes, or get some extra energy and antioxidants with a matcha bowl! The Porrovita menu is so much fun that you'll want to come back again and again to try to different juices, add-ons, and smoothies.

Costa Mesa Courtyards Shopping Ctr
1835 Newport Blvd,D160
Costa Mesa, CA 92627

Travel a bit north and you'll find Afters Ice Cream , a classic California ice cream shop and home to the delectable "milky bun." What is a milky bun? Imagine a fresh warm donut filled with your choice of ice cream. Sound like heaven? We think so too! And of course if you're not in the mood for a donut Afters also offers ice cream in cones and cups, with flavors like churro, cookie monster, and Vietnamese coffee. Finish it off with your choice of toppings and enjoy!

Gelato Paradiso
401 Newport Center Dr
Ste A102
Newport Beach, CA 92660

We follow Gelato Paradiso on Twitter and Instagram, and just looking at their gelato always gives us a serious case of ice cream envy! If Gelato Paradiso's gelato tasted half as good as it looks it would be amazing, but with its perfectly churned velvety texture and decadent flavors it tastes even better! Located in the middle of Fashion Island, Gelato Paradiso makes for a great pit stop during a busy day. Try their popular chocolate, mango, coconut, hazelnut or tiramisu flavors, and add a waffle cone for that extra special touch. Check in on Yelp to get $1 off already affordable prices and don’t let the simple set up or location fool you! This place is a favorite for locals and tourists alike!

The Straw: Modern Milkshakes
215 Baker St
Ste A
Costa Mesa, CA 92626

Last but not least, if you're looking for a more creative and mature place for a frosty treat, stop into The Straw in Costa Mesa. The Straw is more than just a milkshake joint; it's also a place to hang out, chat about more things to do in Orange County, and literally chill out. The bold creative dessert creations and boudoir style wall art at The Straw art set it apart from most of the rest of our recommendations.Try the Bangkok Betty for that Thai mango sticky rice taste, or a Mr. Grey for a unique Earl Grey flavor paired with a churro and Earl Grey tea as a chaser. There's also the Kevin with deep fried bacon and maple syrup or the Vampire Campfire with deep fried garlic and chocolate.
Intrigued? It gets even better. The Straw also offers low calorie and dairy free options for many of their shakes! All in all The Straw is bound to be a winner for ambiance, customer service, and most of all, shakes!
